Classic Who Meta: favorite Liz Shaw moments

Caroline John, who played Liz Shaw, died recently. What are some of your favorite Liz Shaw moments? How do you think she would have interacted with other Doctors, or in the TARDIS? Do you accept as canon the Past Doctor Adventure and Companion Chronicles stories (which have her traveling with the Third Doctor), or the Brief Encounter story which has her traveling with the Fourth Doctor?

I do and don't recall the show at this time. I watched it when it originally aired on this side of the pond. When Who went into syndcation/repeats on PBS Saturday nights, we were more likely to see Four, Five, and Seven--especially Four as he was the most popular Doctor for Americans. However, this will give me an excuse to watch the pre-Jo episodes with Three as I'm gaining a new appreciation for this version of the Doctor.

Inferno! When she was like Evil Fascist Liz in the other universe and the Brig had an eyepatch on?

edit: some sections of the Inferno are on youtube... he hasn't gone to the evil universe yet in the first half hour...:)

Takes a while, if I remember right but then there is lots of it.

I recently had the pleasure of watching the Classic Who episode where Three is introduced to Liz Shaw, Spearhead from Space (7.1, 1970). Three is brand new in this, his Tardis won't work, he steals a suit of clothes and a car, that sort of thing. Meeting Liz is a real highlight for him in a sea of fubar. I liked her professionalism, her resistance to being drafted by UNIT (she is a professor at Cambridge) and her scientific mind. Though in real life, Caroline John sent a bikini photo of herself to the BBC in hopes of landing a TV role (she worked at the National Theater under Lawrence Olivier), Liz Shaw was a modest dresser with a serious look. She was more of a Barbara than a Zoe, imho, and it's cool that the Doctor gets along with and appreciates all kinds of different women (and even a guy every so often!)

If you are looking for a Liz Shaw story, apparently there are only four to choose from:
Spearhead from Space
Doctor Who and the Silurians
The Ambassadors of Death
I can at least tell you that I thought Spearhead from Space was terrific. It is a Nestene/Autons story, which are some of my favorite monsters, and done really well in this story, very creepy. See Three take a shower! his tattoo! his attempt to ditch the Brig! and getting strangled by tentacles!

Thanks Caroline John, you did a great job as Liz Shaw, and held a worthy place among the companions, even if Liz did think he just wanted someone to pass him test tubes and tell him he was brilliant, probably right about that. :)

I recently watched "Doctor Who and the Silurians," and one of the subplots involves the Doctor and Liz attempting to stop a bio-engineered apocalypse plague. Liz really, truly exudes science-y competence throughout.

...he just wanted someone to pass him test tubes and tell him he was brilliant... I love that "quote" from Liz. She was no one's fool!

For favorite moments: basically every single thing she says and does in Ambassadors of Death?

Despite spending most of that serial locked up, she still manages to be more than just a little composed (keeping calm and quiet while being threatened with a gun), crafty (an escape attempt that would've succeeded if not for an unforeseeable twist of fate) and a snarkfest all around (don't worry, I won't harm you, she says while being restrained by her guard).

Plus she gets to ride Bessie in a car chase. It's awesome.

I came here to say almost exactly this. Seconded! She's such a badass in Ambassadors.

Thirded! A cool, calm, and mature Companion is a rare and wonderful thing. Liz was great.

I may or may not have screamed with joy when I found out that Ambassadors of Death will be released on DVD October 1st. Ahem.

Contains Spoilers for Inferno
My favorite Liz Shaw moments are when she was Section Leader Liz Shaw (aka Fascist Liz) in Inferno. Caroline Johns plays her so deliciously evil and cold hearted. Who can ever forget the moment when she shoots the Brigadier Leader so that the Doctor can save the day?

I really enjoyed Liz Shaw as she was a true scientist, very competent, and more than a match for the Doctor. She hit the nail on the head with this quote, the Brig attributed to her, about the Doctor "...all the Doctor really needed was someone to pass him his test tubes and tell him how brilliant he was..."

I really enjoyed Liz Shaw's time on the show.

I adore all of Liz's too-brief-tenure, but Silurians is the absolute pinnacle of the season.

And the 'Companion Chronicles' with Liz are just brilliant. I am gutted there's only one more to come (out in October, apparently) - they're the only CCs that I've bought consistently.

I could easily say all of them.

After all these years, I'm still unhappy that she didn't get a proper send-off.
